Papers of the Tyler family include 18th-century financial and legal papers of Moses Tyler and his sons, Perry C. Tyler and Richard Tyler; papers, 1872-1906, and an account book, 1877-1881, of John E. Tyler; and an unidentified account book, 1901, 1909, 1912. Included are a receipt, 1785, for the purchase of a slave and a slave bill of sale, 1859. The papers of John E. Tyler are primarily related to patents and sales of his inventions of a straw cutter, a gun cartridge, a saw with spirit level and plumb attached, an improvement on revolving fire arms, an invisible sub-marine torpedo boat, a motor apparatus, and an improved fence post for wire fences. John E. Tyler's other correspondence is chiefly about political topics, such as support for candidates and formation of a new county from Bertie, Hertford, and Northampton counties. Also included are a few items, 1737-1793, relating to the Warr family of Northampton County. The additions of September 2002 and November 2004 contain materials from a later period in John E. Tyler's life and relate to historic preservation, family history, and other topics.
