Coal frauds on Mine Hill Railroad and Reading Railroad, 1853 September 3-October 5.

William Payne, "To the public," 3 September 1853, disclaims any involvement in the Forest Improvement Company's short-weighting of coal to the Mine Hill Railroad and provides two tables showing the discrepancies, alleging that David B. De Forest was responsible. N.G. Hammeken, accountant, West Branch Valley, "To the public," 24 September 1853, disclaims foreknowledge of the fraud. Jeremiah Reed, president of the Coal Operators of Schuylkill County, reports in "The Coal frauds" the resolutions passed on 5 October 1853 to investigate the frauds.
