The document is a bond, on a pre-printed form, executed by John Rutledge for himself and his brother Edward, and witnessed by Frederick Rutledge. The bond is in the amount of 500 pounds and is "bound unto the Vestry of the parish of St. Thomas." On the verso of the leaf are additional notes: Payment of the bond, 1807 Jul. 16, by Henry M. Rutledge, $750. Another payment, 1827 Apr. 4, by Maj. H. M. Rutledge, $500.

Edward Rutledge (November 23, 1749 – January 23, 1800) was an American Founding Father and politician who signed the Continental Association and was the youngest signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence.
