Family papers, 1736-1971.

Principally the papers of Catherine Berry Pilcher Avery, but also includes papers of her husband, Dr. Roy C. Avery, her parents, Meritt Scott Pilcher and Margaret Bryan Pilcher, and other members of the Pilcher, Bryan, Berry, Dewees, and Tannehill families. Mrs. Avery was a lifelong resident of Nashville, Tennessee, and many of the papers relate to the history of that city and its institutions. The papers include correspondence, diaries and journals, legal documents, genealogical data, photographs, scrapbooks, and postcards. Correspondents of note include Oswald Theodore Avery, Roy Crowdy Avery, Albert Gleaves Berry, Ferdinand Berry, Mary Lillian Berry, Hardy Bryan, Stanley Fisk Bryan, Eliza Tannehill Gleaves, Mary Berry Knoble, Marie Louise Mis, Margaret Bryan Pilcher, Meritt Scott Pilcher, and Margaret Avery Ritchie. Topics include Virginia Civil War campaigns; the naval career of Admiral Albert Gleaves Berry; Oswald T. Avery's service as a bacteriologist during World War I; and Stanley Fisk Bryan's World War I service in Europe. Diaries and journals are those of Mary Coburn Dewees (1787-1788), Nancy Barrow Pilcher (1845), Eliza Tannehill Gleaves (1846-1878), Mary Elizabeth Hunt (1848-1852), Julia Newberry (1871), and Catherine Berry Pilcher Avery (1908-1909, 1915, 1917). There are also reminiscences about Nashville written by Meritt S. Pilcher in 1934.

Roy Crowdy Avery was born in Canada in 1885. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1917 and immediately joined the U.S. Army for service during World War I.
