This collection contains materials, 1846-1932, concerning the life and Confederate military service of Thomas Jonathan Jackson (1824- 1863) of Lexington, Va. Jackson's correspondence, 1861-1863, while serving as commander of the Stonewall Brigade and of the Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, concerns primarily his involvement in the Romney Campaign, the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862, and the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Other items in the collection include letters to Mary Anna (Morrison) Jackson (1831-1915) discussing her husband after his death, and copies of prewar photographs of Jackson. Correspondents in the papers include Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), Judah Philip Benjamin (1811-1884), Stapleton Crutchfield (1835-1865), and Alexander Robinson Boteler (1815- 1892).

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Alexander R. Boteler (1815-1892) was Virginia political leader, congressman, and Civil War soldier. He graduated from Princeton College, Princeton, New Jersey.
