The Robert Edward Lee Headquarters papers, 1850-1876, consist primarily of orders, circulars, telegrams and correspondence concerning the operations of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 to 1865. Official reports in the collection cover the Maryland Campaign of 1862, the battles of Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, the siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign. Also included are postwar writings, reminiscences, biographical information, private writings of Lee, and newspaper clippings. Correspondents include James Longstreet (1821- 1904), Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (1818-1893), Osmun Latrobe (1835- 1915), Walter Herron Taylor (1838-1916), and other Confederate officers.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
