Consisting of 24 letters, 1939-1945, 1958, to Lindsay and her sister Mary [Lindsay Beall] from cousin Josephine E.V. Spencer and her husband Fred Spencer in England, discussing shortages, relocation, and other aspects of domestic life during World War II. Topics discussed include evacuation of London schools and businesses; comparison of London during World War II versus ca. World War I, including the appearance of women in uniform; death of Josephine's mother in Ireland and inability to attend the funeral because of travel restrictions; and opinion of Winston Churchill. Other letters discuss prices, shortages, and rationing; thoughts on improved standard of living for working class; pessimism as to funding for social reforms proprosed by William Henry Beveridge; comparison of teaching profession in England and United States; lamenting devastation in Europe; noting agricultural work performed by prisoners of war; approval at reelection of F.D. Roosevelt. Places represented include Sutton, Surrey; Ickenham, Middlesex; Evesham, Worcestershire; and London. Also includes scrapbook, 1913-1928, 1937, re Lindsay's student life at Winthrop Normal & Industrial College, including handbooks, photographs of her first school and students in Chesterfield, S.C., and newspaper clippings re reburial of body of Winthrop founder David Bancroft Johnson in chapel on campus.
