James Smith Armstrong papers, 1825-1881.

Contains letters from Richard Miller concerning Armstrong's properties and investments. The letters mention various Cincinnati events, such as the cholera epidemics, financial panics, railroads, the beginning of the Civil War, the formation of the Know-Nothing Party, the failure of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company, weather, etc. The collection, which covers 1825 to 1881, includes ledgers and financial journals, annual financial statements from Cincinnati banks, and two property maps.

In the 1830s, James Smith Armstrong was the Cincinnati agent for Armstrong, Grant and Company, a Maysville, Kentucky salt supplier. Armstrong invested in Cincinnati real estate, banks and railroads. In 1836 he was selected as president of the Commercial Bank of Cincinnati. He moved to France in 1842 and left Richard Miller in charge of his properties and investments.
