Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990. Clement Andrew Smith (1901-1998) was a pediatrician at Boston Lying-In Hospital, later known as Boston Hospital for Women and then Brigham and Women's Hospital, in Boston, Mass. Smith's research focused on newborn infants including fetal and neonatal physiology, perinatalogy, including maternal malnutrition; and the effect of humidity on water balance and respiration.
