The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings. Preparations had begun a few years in advance, culminating in the creation of the May 4 20th Anniversary Commission, at the behest of President Michael Schwartz, in 1989. Professor Bernard R. Jerman, former faculty member of the Kent State University English Department, obtained his degrees from The Ohio State University in the field of English literature. He taught at the University of Kentucky, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Maryland prior to his teaching at Kent State.
