Papers, 1811-1880.

Correspondence, accounts, and drafts of wills, 1812-1852, of Frances Thruston Hughes of "Benvenue," Gloucester County, Va. Correpondents include her brother Thomas Hughes, her nephew Thomas Ball Montague, and Charles Picot of Mr. and Mrs. Picot's Institution for Young Ladies in Philadelphia, Pa. Frances's papers include an undated address probably delivered by her to a graduating class of a female academy, concerning the importance of women continuing their education throughout life. Also included are letters, 1811-1812, of Thomas Hughes, county clerk of Northampton County, N.C., to his brother Herbert H. Hughes of Richmond, Va., concerning Thomas's life in North Carolina, his involvement in the legal system, religious gatherings such as camp meetings, and family. Thomas Ball Montague of Gloucester and Middlesex counties, Va., is the third major figure in this collection with papers, 1838-1869, including materials on the 21st regiment of the Virginia Militia commanded by Montague in 1848 and 1849, a deed of Fanny P. Rowan to Montague concerning the rental of a farm, "La Grange," in Middlesex County, Va., and an attendance certificate, 1838, of Montague awarded by the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va. Miscellany includes a promotional leaflet, 1880, for Chesapeake School, Mathews Court House, Va.
