Papers, 1881-1978.

The collection contains a wide variety of technical manuals, operation logs, and repair guides. These were designed to assist engineers in diagnosing the correcting problems on the Southern Railway locomotives of the 1940s and 1950s. Other articles include newspaper clippings and magazines on the history of Southern Railway, personnel rosters, travel itineraries, and some of Stine's personal papers.

John Howard Stine was a locomotive engineer in the Charlotte Division of the Southern Railway Company from 1941 to 1971. He was involved in two train accidents over the course of his thirty-year career. The latter was a 1963 crash in which an automobile driver was killed.
