Scrapbook (1901), with transcription of diary kept by Bancroft from May 10, 1861 to June 20, 1864, describing the regiment's service in Northern Virginia, and Bancroft's detachment to the Balloon service from October 1861 to June 1862. Bancroft added his contemporary accounts of battles and comments to the narrative. He also inserted letters and pictures, plus lithographs and engravings taken from books and periodicals.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829.
