Asbury Coward papers, 1863 and ca. 1870.

Orders, 29 Jan. 1863, issued from Headquarters, 5th Regt., South Carolina Volunteers, "Special Order No. 4," naming officers and men sent to arrest absentees and procure conscripts and volunteers, signed: "By Command of Col. A Coward[,] W.D. Hardy[,] Act. Adjt."; Typescript volume of memoirs, ca. 1870, re his reminiscences of Civil War service, including battles of Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Gaines's Mill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, siege of Knoxville, the Wilderness, and the Petersburg campaign; includes Coward's version of the fatal shooting of Brig. Gen. Micah Jenkins by his own men during the Wilderness, reaction of the Confederate soldiers to news of the surrender, and his trip back to South Carolina. Coward recalls his determination to resume his life in South Carolina rather than consider voluntary exile in Brazil or Mexico.
