This collection contains the personal correspondence and memorabilia of two families of two different time periods. The Waddells are the contributors of the Civil War period correspondence which demonstrate in great detail the conditions of the lives of those left at home and of the needs of the soldiers. These letters also demonstrate the role of an officer and the ability to have his wife follow his movements. The later correspondence and personal records were contributed by the Setze family. They contain information regarding teaching school in Atlanta, working for the telephone company and enlisting in the WAVES (Women Appointed for Volunteer Emergency Service). Aso included in the collection are newspaper clippings, restaurant menus and postcards.

James D. Waddell, trained as a lawyer, was a Colonel in the Confederate Army. He served with the Georgia Volunteers in the 20th Regiment, Benning's Brigade, Hood's Division, Longstreet's Corps. James was a friend of Alexander H. Stephens, and he served as a state representative in 1866. His sister was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Waddell who married Dr. Eugene J. Setze of Marietta in 1857.
