Include account book of Jane Catherine (Coleman) Hamilton of Halifax County, Va., kept by her brother and guardian, Ethelbert Algernon Coleman, showing expenditures, 1838-1853, incurred on her behalf, slave lists, 1819-1864, taxable property, 1853-1856 and recipes. Also include diary, 1831-1833, of Ethelbert Algernon Coleman kept while a student at the University of Virginia medical school, 1831-32, and the University of Pennsylvania medical school, 1832-1833, describing student life, studies, Robley Dunglison, and visits with John Randolph of Roanoke and Thomas Jefferson Randolph; and typescript copy of the diary, with genealogical data at end. Also include partial notebook, 1844-1845, kept by William Cabell Rives, in mathmatics class at the University of Virginia, with a class roll inscribed inside the cover. Also include account books, 1876-1914, kept by Nathaniel Ragsdale Coleman and wife Annie Nelson Page Coleman for their tobacco plantation in Halifax County, Va., including freedmen's accounts and tobacco sales accounts.
