This collection contains biographical information, resumes, research notebooks, correspondence, published materials, appointment books, and calendars. The records document the career of Hoffman, focusing on her Iowa State and Ames Laboratory years and her professional commitments in her current positions. Series A contains Hoffman's vita and a listing of her published articles. Series B comprises the bulk of the collection and includes research materials and correspondence related to Hoffman's work. The Iowa State materials include math quizzes and calculations while the Ames Laboratory materials include detailed calculation notebooks on a series of experiments. Series C, Correspondence, illustrates the personal and professional life of Hoffman and contains letters from Hoffman's Iowa State mentor, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Nellie Naylor. The Published Materials, Series E, includes a wide variety of material, such as a history of nuclear and radiochemistry at Los Alamos, and articles by and about Hoffman. The remainder of the collection documents Hoffman's awards and her family.

Nuclear chemist. Darleane Christian Hoffman received her B.S. (1948) in Chemistry and her Ph. D (1951) in Physical (Nuclear) Chemistry from Iowa State University.
