This is an audio cassette tape recording of the dedication ceremony for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Antarctic Research Center on July 23, 1978. The recording begins with remarks from SIO Director Edward A. Frieman who introduces Captain Brian Shoemaker. Other speakers are Navy Lieutenant Commander Lee Devandorff, Dr. Peter Wilkness, David H. Bromwich and Robert H. Whritner. Speakers discuss the national and scientific importance of Antarctica and the facilities and importance of the S.I.O. Antarctic Research Center.
