Manuscript copy of a journal kept from 16 July 1742 - 13 Jan. 1751 by Rev. John Walley, minister of the South Parish of Ipswich, Mass. (Congregational) from 1747. The bulk of the diary relates to his personal religious devotion, reflections, and secret prayers during the Great Awakening. Additional subjects include his ordination as pastor in Ipswich, a tour to Conn. and western Mass. in 1743, including a meeting with Rev. Jonathan Edwards, elections, King George's War, rebellion in England, earthquakes, and comet sightings. Also included are a Walley family genealogy and an original letter from Walley to his father, John, of 8 Sep. 1743. The diary was probably transcribed by Frederick L. Gay.
