Letter : Abingdon, Va., to Mr. Campbell, 1864 July 16.

Letter concerns a difficult march by two brigades of cavalry through "desolate and hostile" country to Mt. Sterling (Kentucky), the capture of Mt. Sterling, robbery of the Mt. Sterling bank by the officers of General Morgan's staff (which Alston deplores), a battle with Union troops at Mt. Sterling, Alston's escape from the enemy, and a battle at Cynthiana (Ky.). Alston also briefly discusses family matters, and comments on Kentucky politics and the "political effect" of recent events on the people of Kentucky, who have mostly been "cured of their Unionism" by Negro soldiers.
