Committee of Correspondence papers, 1765-1779.

Papers include correspondence, memorials and transcripts of memorials, and photostats and copies of correspondence pertaining to Charles Garth's dealings with the South Carolina General Assembly and British authorities. Papers chiefly concern pre-Revolutionary trade controversies between Great Britain and the American colonies including the Stamp Act, but also include letters of the Revolutionary War period. Correspondence includes letters (1766-1768) between Charles Garth and the Committee of Correspondence of the South Carolina General Assembly and photostats of letters (1773-1775). Memorials (1768) are addressed to the Lords Commissioners of the (British) Board of Treasury on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina. Other correspondence includes a letter (1779) of John Dickinson regarding Congress's appointment of a minister to Great Britain, fisheries, and treaties with Great Britain, a fragment of a letter (1778) to Henry Laurens, and a letter (1777) in French from Baron D'Arendt concerning military matters.

Charles Garth (ca.1734-1784) was born to Rebecca Brompton and John Garth, in Devizes, England. He was educated at Merton College, Oxford, and was called into the bar at Inner Temple in 1758. The Committee of Correspondence was created in 1721 by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly. The same act also provided for the hiring of an agent to represent South Carolina interests to British authorities including the British Board of Trade and Plantations, the British Treasury, and Parliament.
