William W. Dallam, who served as a private in the Confederate Army, transcribed this farewell address by Lee to his army. Lee's signature is affixed to the transcript. Also included is a short narrative, 1954 July 11, by C. Braxton Dallam, giving a history of the copy and of Lee's autograph.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
