Papers pertaining to the writing and publishing of "Scarlett" by Alexandra Ripley, including: manuscripts, typescripts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, two first editions, keepsakes, promotional material, hard disks, audio and videotapes, and research material, particularly from a trip to Ireland. The manuscripts series contains summaries, outlines, drafts and revisions, and the final typescript and revisions. The miscellaneous and research series contains a talk about the writing of "Scarlett"; correspondence and tapes of phone conservations with agent, editor, publisher and friends including two letters from Barbara Mertz mentioning one of her mystery series; fan mail; and proof of the Life excerpt. Also photographs of Ripley; press releases; promotional material particularly from a tour for Editions Belfond, France; material from a "Gone With The Wind" Forum in Richmond, Va.; clippings of articles and reviews; research material including copies of Middleton family letters, several books and tapes re Ireland and Irish music and language; and memorabilia. Non-"Scarlett" material includes writing assignments and notes for a class with Richard Coleman; a typescript for Dove Audio abridgement of "Charleston"; and copies of "Charleston" and "On Leaving Charleston."

Margaret Mitchell (b. November 8, 1900, Atlanta, Georgia-d. August 16, 1949, Atlanta, Georgia), the daughter of Eugene M. Mitchell, was a prominent attorney. Her mother, Maybelle Stephens Mitchell, was active in the women's suffrage movement. Margaret Mitchell attended Atlanta public schools, graduated from Washington Seminary in Atlanta, and attended Smith College for one year before leaving college upon the death of her mother.
