Letters, 1789 and 1807-21, from Thomas B. Wait, a publisher in Portland, Me. and Boston, to George Thacher, U.S. congressman (Federalist) from Biddeford, Me. (1789-1801) and associate justice of the Mass. Supreme Judicial Court (1801-24). Wait's letters for 1789 were written from Portland, where he was the founder and publisher of the Cumberland Gazette, to Thacher in Washington. The letters primarily concern Wait's opinions on national politics, including compensation for elected officials, the constitution, and the molasses tax. Letters, 1807-21, were written from Boston after Wait's return there, to Thacher in Biddeford. Letters to 1812 discuss the workings of the Mass. legislature, state politics, elections, and political parties. Later letters discuss Wait's publishing activities, their lifelong friendship and affection, religion, the court, and current publications.
