Papers, 1929-1991, bulk 1978-1990.

Two collections of Roger Revelle Papers were donated to the SIO Archives. In 1984, Revelle donated his early files dated 1929-1976 (bulk 1946-1976) which were cataloged at Manuscript Collection MC6. This second collection of Roger Revelle Papers was donated after his death by Ellen Revelle in 1992. The collection includes correspondence, meeting minutes, manuscripts of publications, notes, speeches, photographs, and other papers documenting Revelle's career and life. It provides particularly strong documentation of his work as scientist and public policy scholar during the period 1978-1990, after his return to the University of California, San Diego from Harvard University. The collection includes documentation of Revelle's naval career (1941-1948), his long association with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of California, San Diego and his participation in the Pacific atomic bomb tests (1949-1956). It includes substantial documentation of Revelle's participation in organizations including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, La Jolla Playhouse, National Academy of Sciences, and the United Nations. The collection includes substantial documentation of Revelle's interest in the relationship of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to global warming. The collection is arranged in nine series: biographical series, correspondence series, organizations series, UCSD series, subject series, writing, speeches and publications series, writing of other series, calendars, addresses and telephone memo records series and audiovisual series.
