Rear Admiral John Monkton memoirs, 1823.

John Monkton's memoirs recount his naval career up to the rank of lieutenant between 1766 and 1780, when he served in the Caribbean Area, Scotland, and Newfoundland on the ships Chatham, Lark, Aurora, Carysfort, Maidstone, Boreas, Three Sisters, and Vestal. A few pages of transcription of the memoirs is also included.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782). John Monkton was born in the county of Somersetshire, England, in 1755 and began a career in the Royal Navy in 1766, serving in the Caribbean Area, the Orkney and Shetland Islands off Scotland, Newfoundland, Gibraltar, Portsmouth, and the Napoleonic Wars.
