Verne E. Chatelain (1895-1991) was a professor of history at the University of Maryland from 1945 until 1964. Before coming to the university, Chatelain served as the first chief historian for the National Park Service between 1931 and 1936. The Chatelain papers primarily consist of student papers for Chatelain's History of Maryland courses, as well as drafts of articles he wrote about the origins of the university, a few historical photographs, and slides. Architectural plans and correspondence related to the restoration of the courthouse in Port Tobacco, Marland, are also included. In addition, the collection contains geneological information and tombstone inscriptions from cemeteries in Howard County, Maryland. This collection is unprocessed, but preliminary inventory is available.
