Correspondence, 1824-1881 (4,075 items), letterbooks, 1835-1861 (2 v.), and diaries, 1827-1830, 1842-1881 (22 v.) of Hugh Blair Grigsby of "Edgehill," Charlotte County, Va., and Norfolk, Va., while serving in the Virginia General Assembly and attending the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830, and while travelling to various places in Virginia, along the East Coast, and in Canada. Topics include local, state, and federal politics, and social and intellectual life. Also included are account books and loose accounts concerning travel expenses, book purchases, and agricultural operations at "Edgehill"; commonplace books and materials concerning Grigsby's writings on Virginia history; school materials from Yale University; miscellaneous legal documents; and collected letters of Thomas Jefferson, John Tyler (1790-1862), George Washington (copies), Patrick Henry, Littleton Waller Tazewell, and John Randolph of Roanoke (especially concerning his library, which Grigsby later purchased). Also represented in the collection are Benjamin Porter Grigsby (1770-1810), Presbyterian minister in Norfolk, Va., including his correspondence, commonplace books, and legal papers; Mary Venable (Carrington) Grigsby (1813-1894), including her correspondence with female friends; Hugh Carrington Grigsby (1856-1909), including correspondence and account books in part concerning agricultural operations at "Edgehill"; and members of the Whitehead and Carrington families.
