The collection includes the correspondence, 1786-1810, accounts, legal records, miscellany, and estate records of Melchizedek Spragins (1763-1810), planter of Halifax County, Va. Also, includes the correspondence, 1806-1857, of Thomas Lanier Spragins (1789?-1863) of Halifax County (concerning agricultural operations and family news), account books, loose accounts and other financial records, and record books, 1835-1843, kept by agents of Thomas Lanier Spragins concerning the operations of a ferry and a tobacco warehouse. Also, includes the correspondence, 1834-1851, of Fayette Baker Spragins (1817-1852), physician of Halifax County, Va., primarily as a medical student at Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky.; correspondence, 1836-1839, of Eliza Ann (Spragins) Clark (1821-1897), especially while a student at the Salem Female Academy, Winston-Salem, N.C., account books, loose accounts, and commonplace book; and correspondence, 1793-1826, account books, loose accounts, and other financial and legal records of Brooks Baker (d. 1826) of Charlotte County, Va. Also, includes Charlotte and Halifax County land and legal records and miscellaneous papers of other members of the Spragins family.
