Papers, 1789-1931.

This collection contains the papers of members of four generations of the Smith and Hawes families of Virginia. Papers of Judith Anna (Smith) Smith include an account book, 1802-1814, of domestic expenses; a diary, 1789-1790, of religious meditations; and a few letters to her daughter. Papers of her daughter, Judith Anna (Smith) Hawes of Richmond, Va., include a commonplace book, 1824, of religious meditations and letters from her son. Papers of her son, Samuel Horace Hawes of Richmond, include correspondence, 1861-1865, with his parents, sisters, and friends on secession and the Civil War while he served in the Confederate Army. There are also three diaries, 1860-1865, documenting his service and time spent as a prisoner of war. The collection also contains a diary, 1886-1887, kept by his wife, Martha Crane (Heath) Hawes, in Newark, N.J., and Virginia, and a diary, 1888-1889, kept by Horace Sterling Hawes as a student at Rutgers University.
