Travel journal : kept by an Englishwoman in Europe. 1825 April 24-August 19.

While traveling in Europe with her husband, this Englishwoman records her impressions of towns in France (Paris, Strasbourg, Versailles), Italy (Turin, Milan, Verona, Venice), and Switzerland (Geneva, Berne, Interlaken, Lucerne, Zurich). She writes about her sightseeing itinerary with occasional references to Napoleon and revolutionary events, and details of the cost of food, travel, and accommodations, including the mileage between towns (at the end of the journal). Topics include local architecture, vineyards, nature (gardens, trees, terrain, mountains, scenery) and visits to churches and palaces to see artwork (described in detail). She describes the clothing and hairstyles of the women, attends the opera, climbs the Swiss alps on mule, and descends to a glacier. The diarist is contemptuous of the villagers, especially women they encounter, frequently referring to them as cretins, living in "filth and dirt," with goiters on their necks.
