A tinsmith by trade, George Dietrich operated a hardware store in Bloomington from 1839 to 1864. In 1839 Dietrich bought the tinner's tools left by the Freylies Brothers whose business had failed earlier. Between 1844 and 1845, he was joined in the hardware business by his brother John, who was also a trained tinsmith. In 1864, Dietrich retired from his business on Front St. and moved to Normal, Ill.
