Mike Gravel Papers, 1957-1980.

The Mike Gravel Papers consist mainly of the records of Gravel's years in the United States Senate. They not only reflect Gravel's involvement in Alaskan issues (particularly land issues, including the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act); but also international issues such as the Vietnam War, his public reading of the Pentagon Papers, the Panama Canal controversy, and the proposed Central American sea-level canal. In addition, there is material on energy questions (oil and gas development, nuclear energy), ethics and accountability in government, Gravel's use of media in his political campaigns, and his bid for the Vice Presidential nomination in 1972. The major groups of records include legislative files, correspondence, issue files, campaign materials, constituent services, public relations, staff files, and office records. In addition to manuscript materials, the Gravel Papers contain photographs, slides, audio and video tapes, films, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.
