Oliver Howard was born in Leeds, Maine, the son of Rowland Bailey Howard and Eliza Otis Howard. Rowland, a farmer, died when Oliver was 9 years old. Richard Theodore Greener (January 30, 1844 – May 2, 1922) was the first African American graduate of Harvard College and went on to become the dean of the Howard University School of Law.
