Capitol building annex design competition records, 1976-1977.

Records documenting a 1976-1977 competition to design an annex to the state capitol building to house a public hearing room, auditorium, visitor's center, parking, and the Minnesota Historical Society. Entitled "Minnesota II: A national terratectual competition for a capitol building annex," the competition was authorized by the state legislature and conducted by the Capital Area Architectural and Planning Board. Stage I was held in 1976. Five finalists were selected by a nine-member panel of architects and prominent Minnesotans and were invited to submit detailed drawings for Stage II. The winner was a design for a building to be constructed under the Capitol Mall; it was submitted by C. F. Murphy Associates, Chicago. The legislature later decided not to proceed with the construction.
