Papers 1837-1960 (bulk 1837-1850).

Records include historical materials, bills, receipts, hauling agreements, check rolls and engineering notebooks, primarily documenting the day to day operations and pay of supervisors, engineers and other employees of the railroad and canal from 1840-1850. Of note are engineering notebooks containing water levels of the canal. One book contains the levels of John Roebling's line from Blacklick Creek to Ebensburg, Pa. Also are included historical material and publications.

John A. Roebling emigrated to New Jersey from Germany in 1831, abandoned farming, and returned to his profession of engineering. He moved to Trenton, N.J., in about 1848 and built a steel wire plant, operated as John A. Roebling's Sons Company. John A. The Allegheny Portage Railroad covered a 36 mile stretch up and down the sides of Allegheny Mountain between Johnstown (Cambria Co.) and Hollidaysburg (Blair Co.). Built between 1831 and 1833, the Railroad used a system of inclined planes to link the two lines of the Pennsylvania Canal.
