Alexander Gregg Kollock papers, 1876-1890.

Letter, [1890], from R[ichard] A[lexander] F[ullerton] Penrose, Jr., (1863-1931) a geologist, mine engineer, educator, and son of physician R.A.F. Penrose (1827-1908), congratulating Kollock on his recent marriage, recalling his college years at Harvard as a member of the Class of 1884, and discussing his career and travels. In his 1890 letter [written from Little Rock, Ark.], Penrose notes that he had last heard from Kollock in 1885, commenting on his student days at Harvard as a member of the rowing crew competing against Columbia and Yale in 1885, informing Kollock that he received a Ph. D. in Geology from Harvard in 1886, discussing his subsequent career as a manager of mines in Canada and as a member of the Texas and Arkansas State Geological Survey, describing a trip down the Rio Grande River, "It was the first time the trip had ever been made & I was told that it was impossible." Penrose continues that he had traveled extensively over the United States and Canada while preparing a report on manganese ores of North America; reports on the careers of family members and other mutal friends, such as the successful political career of his brother, Boies Penrose, as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate; Penrose wrote on letterhead stationery of the Geological Survey of Arkansas, where R.A.F. Penrose, Jr., served as the Assistant Geologist in Charge of Iron and Manganese. Also including autograph album, 1876-1880, with inscriptions from family and friends in Cheraw and elsewhere in S.C., followed by later entries from friends identified as natives of New York, Massachusetts, West Virginia, and elsewhere [several entries mention DeVeaux College at Niagara Falls, N.Y.]. Text of marriage ceremony, 22 Jan. 1890, performed by Rev. Thornton G. Whaling at the union of Henrietta Buchanan Malloy and A.G. Kollock in Cheraw, S.C.; and a news item re a bequest left by R.A.F. Penrose to the U.S. Geological Survey published in Time magazine (7 Aug. 1933)

Born in Philadelphia in 1860, Boies Penrose graduated from Harvard University and practiced law in his native city in 1883. From 1884 until 1897 he served in the Pennsylvania legislature as a representative and senator. An unsuccessful candidate for mayor of Philadelphia in 1895, he served as a United States senator from 1897 until his death in Washington, D.C., in 1921.
