Alec Waugh, elder brother of Evelyn Waugh, had a long and productive career as a writer. He fought in France in World War I, and was a prisoner of war; his first novel, the controversial Loom of Youth, was published during the war. After the war, he lived an itinerant lifestyle, and his travels supplied him with story ideas for his fiction and served as the basis of his popular travel books.
