J.H. and Ella Romig Journals, 1898-1095. [microform].

Five holographic journals kept by Ella Mae Ervin Romig and three travel journals kept by Joseph Herman Romig, Jr. The journals of Ella Romig were kept for her parents and, later, for her father and children. Ella Romig's journals include observations of day-to-day life in Bethel, Alaska including her perceptions and observations of Yup'ik culture and her experience as the wife of a Moravian Missionary and physician. J.H. Romig's journals were kept for his wife, Ella, and include his experiences traveling in Alaska.

The Moravians came to the United States in 1735 primarily to preach the gospel to the Indians. Although the Moravians had contacts with many Indian tribes, they did most of their work among the Delawares. They followed this tribe westward from Pennsylvania to Ohio, to Canada, to Indiana,and finally to Kansas.
