The collection consists of the papers of oceanographer and geophysicist John G. Sclater dated 1972-1991. The papers include correspondence, memoranda, financial records, proposals and notes documenting Sclater's scientific work at MIT (1972-1983), the University of Texas (1983-1991) and at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (1965-1972; 1991- ). The collection does not document Sclater's education at Edinburgh University and Cambridge University, nor does it include information about the SIO expeditions Sclater participated in during the 1960's.
