Miscellaneous papers for various West Virginia counties, including Barbour, Brooke, Cabell, Calhoun, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hardy, Harrison, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marshall, Mason, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Ohio, Preston, Randolph, Roane, Upshur, Wetzel, Wirt, and Wood. Materials include correspondence, financial papers (accounts, account books, and tax receipts), legal documents (land grants, deeds, and indentures, including several signed by Virginia governors Edmund Randolph, Henry A. Wise, and James Wood), scrapbooks, commonplace books, diaries, and genealogical and local history sketches. Of particular interest are genealogical essays by Howard Brooke Grant; miscellaneous papers concerning Alexander Campbell, founder of the Disciples of Christ; the 1904 autobiography of Daniel S. Dewees of his life growing up in central West Virginia; a scrapbook containing the 1881 newspaper edition of Alexander Scott Withers's "Chronicles of Border Warfare"; the diary of an unidentified women describing American and European travels, ca. 1906-1910; a physician's account book and pharmacopeia, 1845-1878; the report of the Pinkerton Detective Agency on the burning of Volcano, Wood co., W. Va., in 1879; and many items relating to visits to various natural springs and resorts.
