Diary, 1874-1899.

Diary of Smithson (b. 1834), a Methodist Episcopal minister, while stationed at Easton, Md., and Falls Church, Va., 1874-1875 and 1877; Romney, W. Va., 1881; Winchester, Va., 1890; and Charles Town, W. Va., and Roanoke, Va., 1899. Entries typically indicate only places visited and basic activities (preaching, conducting prayer services, marriages, baptisms, funerals, and Sunday School, and visiting parishioners). While based in Easton, Md., Smithson also served towns in Caroline, Queen Anne's, and Talbot counties, and visited his family in Harford County, Md. During his stay in Falls Church, Va., he also served a church in Langley, Va. While based in Romney, W. Va., Smithson travelled throughout Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, and Pendleton counties, and spent some time in Pleasant Dale, Hampshire County, debating infant baptism with a Campbellite preacher. While in Winchester, Va., he also served the church in Stephens City and made trips to towns in Clarke, Frederick, and Warren counties. While living in Charles Town, W. Va., and Roanoke, Va., (where he served at Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church), he appears to have done little church- related travelling.
