Vander Meulen graduated from Hope College in 1897 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1900. He was licensed and ordained a minister by the Reformed Church in America in 1900. He held several pastorates before joining the faculty of Western Theological Seminary as a professor of the New Testament in 1920.
