Laman is a 1956 graduate of Hope College and a 1959 graduate of Western Theological Seminary. He was licensed and ordained a minister by the Reformed Church in America in 1959. That same year he went to Japan to serve as a missionary. Laman is assistant professor of Theological English as well as Director of Field Education at Tokyo Union Seminary.
