Consisting chiefly of land and legal papers documenting the role of the "Society for Promoting and Encouraging the Education of Children and Assisting and Establishing Schools for That Purpose in Beaufort District," known also as the "Beaufort District Society," in promoting education in Beaufort District, later Beaufort County, prior to and following the Civil War. Also includes minutes of meetings, resolutions, lists of officers, membership applications, and sworn statements attesting to the value of property mortgaged on behalf of the Society; together with materials pertaining to the membership of James Washington Moore (1837-1912), including the payment of his salary as a school teacher through the Society, his formal application for membership in 1859, and his election as secretary and treasurer in 1870. Civil War items include 101 letters from brothers Henry W. Moore of Hampton's Legion and Asst. Surgeon in 2nd S.C. Cavalry, James Washington Moore of Beaufort District Troop in Hampton Legion, and George W. Moore; written mainly to sisters Sarah Ellen ("Sam"), Sabring Ann ("Benie"), and Mary Jane ("Mamie") as well as to their mother Sabrina W. Moore. Well-written letters describe camp life in Hampton Legion in S.C., N.C., and Va.; letters from Henry occasionally include maps or sketches of camp scenes, including 11 July and 19 Dec. 1861; letter, 5 Aug. 1861, "Camp Johnson," John to Bernie, including a sketch of the position of camp; and 18 Oct. 1861, in which Henry describes his examination for post of Asst. Surgeon. By late 1861, the brothers are serving in Virginia; letter, 19 Dec. 1861, Henry writes detailed account of skirmish near Pohick Church in Fairfax County, Va.; little to no correspondence survives from years 1862-1863; James writes letter, 8 July 1864, re battle on John's island with Union forces that included African-American soldiers. Post-Civil War materials include a report of assets and outstanding debts, 1870; delinquent land certificates for Gillisonville, S.C., property purchased by J.W. Moore at tax sales; legal papers documenting the society's forecosure actions against the estates of former mortgagees; turpentine leases; and Hampton County land papers.
