Philip Horowitz papers, 1932-2001.

Ser. I , Personal papers, consists of correspondence, sermons and talks, newspaper clippings, personal memorabilia and photographs. Ser. II, Brith Emeth records, consists of administrative records and program documents. In addition to Rabbi Horowitz's personal papers, series I also contains material on Philip Horowitz's mother, Deborah Horowitz, including her charity work, and on the wedding of Horowitz's daughter, Ilana Horowitz to Chuck Ratner. Series II includes material on the men's and women's clubs and youth group at the Temple, as well as the religious school, temple services, and some photographs. The collection is of value to researchers interested in Cleveland's Jewish community and in the Reform rabbinate in the second half of the 20th century. Of particular interest is the 1956-1957 correspondence related to the arrangements made by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the World Union for Progressive Judaism to send Rabbi Horowitz to Israel as their representative to institute liberal Judaism there.
