The collection includes letters, 1780-1790, written by Levin Joynes (1753-1794) while a member of the Virginia Senate and while serving with the 9th Virginia Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Continental Army at Morristown, N.J., and Philadelphia, Pa. Also includes family and professional correspondence, 1811-1856, of Thomas Robinson Joynes (1789-1858), lawyer and court clerk of "Montpelier," Accomack County, Va., commonplace book, and miscellany; as well as correspondence of his wife, Anne Bell Satchell Joynes (1792-1862). Also includes correspondence, 1833-1876, memoir, diary, 1840, accounts, and miscellaneous materials of Doctor Levin Smith Joynes (1819- 1881) of Richmond and Accomack County, Va., concerning his medical education and practice, and visits to Europe. Some materials concern the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond during the Civil War. Also includes correspondence, 1871-1898, and diaries (3 vols.), 1883, of Levin Joynes (1862-1946) of Richmond, Va., and while traveling in Great Britain, France, and Italy; and a diary, 1864, of Julia Ann Burnham Mitchell (1807-1876) of Richmond, Va., in part concerning visits to England, France, and Canada.
