The collection includes correspondence, 1787-1831, and accounts of merchant William Haxall (1751-1834) of Petersburg, Va., and materials, 1809-1831, compiled by Haxall concerning horses, horse breeding, and horse- racing at Newmarket, Prince George County, Va. Also includes materials concerning the Petersburg mercantile firm of William & Henry Haxall, and African-American slaves. Also contains correspondence, accounts, and estate materials of Joseph Haxall (d. 1821) of Petersburg and Charles City County, Va.; letters and a petition concerning Duncan Rose (d. 1785) and his service on the Virginia Board of Trade (including a 1781 letter from Thomas Jefferson); and letters written to Duncan Rose (d. 1803) of Petersburg, Va.
