George W. Nash letter, 3 January 1911.

Sgt. Major George W. Nash, an officer in Battery "F", 1st Michigan Light Artillery Regt., writes to a former comrade who served in the 50th Ohio Infantry Regt. He relates several incidents that took place while their respective regiments campaigned together in Kentucky and Tennessee. He provides details of the Battle of Richmond, Ky., including his capture along with several fellow soldiers. He mentions the arduous march to Knoxville in the winter of 1863-1864 and the events leading up to the taking of Atlanta, including his claim to have fired the first shot into Atlanta. Nash also provides a brief personal family history.

Mahlon D. Manson served as a captain of the 5th Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican War. After the War he served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1851-1852. In 1861 he was instrumental in raising the 10th Indiana Regiment and a short time later was promoted to colonel. In 1870 he was elected to Congress and served from 1871-1873.
