LeRoy West came to Juneau in 1929. He began working for the federal government in 1935 with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads. Later he worked for the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Corps of Engineers. After receiving a certificate as a professional electrical engineer in 1949 he began working for the U.S. Coast Guard in Juneau as a civilian employee.
